Overview

Associations: China

Capital: Victoria

Government: Hong Kong has a western-style financial center that operates as a part of the communist state of China under the “one country, two systems” policy. This system allows Hong Kong to maintain its economic independence as outlines in the former lease agreement with Britain, and this state of affairs should remain as is until 2047. For the moment, China has operated in a fairly laissez-faire manner, but this could, of course, change.

Location: Hong Kong is located in the South China Sea in Eastern Asia, near main land China.

Climate: Hong Kong’s climate is officially called a tropical monsoon climate. Winters in Hong Kong are cool and humid; the spring and summers are hot and rainy, and the falls are warm and sunny.

Religion: Nearly 90% of the residents of Hong Kong practice some form of local religion and the remaining 10% of the population is Christian.

Entry and Exit: Hong Kong has four airports.

Non-resident stay: Visas are not required for tourist or business stays of up to 90 days. Qualified applicants intending to start a company that will create local employment may receive a Business Investment Visa. The BIV is generally easy to obtain provided the applicant is a businessperson or investor wishing to benefit from doing business in and from Hong Kong.

Language: Both Cantonese and English are official languages in Hong Kong.

Communication: Hong Kong has an excellent communications infrastructure.

Currency: Hong Kong Dollar (HKD)

GDP per capita: $28,700 (2003 estimates)

Main industry: Hong Kong’s main industries are textiles, clothing, tourism, banking, shipping, electronics, plastics, toys, watches, and clocks.

Unique characteristics: Hong Kong offers a flag of convenience and is particularly known as a T-7 tax haven. Hong Kong is especially popular for holding, insurance, and trading companies as well as investment funds. It is an international banking center and shipping port. Investors also benefit from Hong Kong’s strict banking secrecy laws. Lastly, Hong Kong is a member of the Financial Action Task Force.
